So I've had this problem in the past. I found a resolve, and usually when I find a resolve to something.. I make a note of it. Well, I can't find it.
Edit: Please move this to appropriate place. I didn't realize I put this in 'Spiceworks Support'. I've been working on and off with it. I found the resolve. Which no one here would have thought of anyway. I appreciate everyones help. So what I found out was, the pc feel off the domain. Because I was logged into an account that already had a profile loaded on the pc, I didn't get the 'trust relationship' error.
I logged in with a different account to try something and that is how I found out that it fell of the domain. I re added it to the domain and it is now installing.
The reason I believe for this, is because we use a licensing server. When I go to install Office , the progress bar sits with no progress and then the 'stopped working' error box pops up. Have you tried with a different setup file? Have you had a look in task manager when it freezes?
Does it freeze the whole machine? Did this machine used to have Office on it or is this a new machine? The computer doesn't freeze. Taskman shows the install and the error box, also I didn't see any other running processes associated with office. Yes it had an old version of office I uninstalled.
I used ccleaner to clean the registry. I also used a few 'fix it' applications from microsoft to verify that all registry was gone. Try using revo-uninstaller to clean up the rest of the old office install. Maybe something is still hanging out somewhere that other things have missed. Could be. It's on a thumb drive. I just reinstalled office on another pc about 5 minutes before hand and it worked beautifully. I'll check it and get back to you.
When I've had a similar situation before I've actually had to reinstall the old version of office, use revo-uninstaller to uninstall it, reboot and then was able to install the newer version. We use symantech and malwarebytes.. Still worth disabling the AV. Just because it worked the other times doesn't mean it hasn't locked up some file on this machine. I turned smantec off and win firewall isn't on either. I haven't used a licensing server before so I'd never have known there was a correlation.
Good catch. Anything coming up in windows event viewer during the time of the install? Any logs or event IDs would be helpful If it's just a basic workstation, I would soon just result to re imaging, as funky things like this tend to hinder down the road as well. I have revo somewhere, I'll try that too.. Also have you checked that you don't have malware or even your AV screwing up the install. Nope revo picked up nothing and the usb is fine. Any hidden folders from the previous install that you can delete?
